What corporates can learn from innovative start-ups
Having started and led three businesses, Phil Harvey, director of brand and communications at Inmarsat understands that when it comes to innovation, there’s a great deal corporates can learn from young, agile businesses.
“Innovation is clearly linked to start up mentality,” says Phil. “Something I’ve witnessed at the start-ups I’ve worked at was the amount of sharing that goes on, and how willing people were to help each other.”
Phil puts this down to a strong culture of innovation, which he believes stems from three key things:
But, warns Phil, while corporates can benefit from adopting a start-up ethos, there are inevitable differences between the two. “Change is a necessary element in the world of the entrepreneur but continuous change and evolution is not helpful when you’re leading thousands of people,” he says. "Innovation must be at the pace and scale appropriate to your company."
